President's Message

Welcome to 2020. It's hard to believe that we have reached another new year and we here at OTEI thank you all for your continued support of our programs. As we enter 2020 we are looking forward to another great year of programs and study tours to support youth in our community.

First of all, I want to recognize Gary Ingram, CGCS on being named the winner of the GCSAA President's Award for Environmental Stewardship. This award is the highest award presented annually by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America in recognition of efforts to protect and preserve our environment.  Those of us who know Gary well have seen his passion for protecting the environment in action throughout the years and this is a major focus of all of our OTEI Study Tours. I couldn't think of a more deserving recipient of this award. This award also represents the culmination of the other numerous environmental awards Gary has received over many years. Congratulations, Gary!!

This past summer we also had another successful Googie and Friends Memorial Golf Tournament.  This tournament which supports the four junior golf programs in Oakland provides the majority of funds that allow us to continue our programs. This past year's tournament provided over $7500 to each of the programs. We thank all those who participated or provided sponsorships. Planning is already underway for the 2020 event which will be held on Monday, August 10th. Hope to see you there.

In addition to everything else that he does, Gary Ingram does a great job of coordinating numerous programs throughout the year with our local youth. We always welcome additional assistance so please try and join us if you have some spare time or just want to experience a day with some of the youth we work with. I guarantee that you will go home with a different perspective of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for these youth. Just let us know if you want to join us for a few hours this year.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy year!

Gary Carls, CGCS
